During these shows, we annonced the availability of 6 new products :
  • Koboguard 5400 IDD : a low molecular weight polymer (Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene) dispersed in Isododecane. Low odor, oil soluble resin for improved adhesion and substantivity of the cosmetic film to the skin, lashes, hair or nail and better water resistance of the film. It is an excellent alternative to Rosin based derivatives.
  • Florite-R : a Calcium Silicate cluster having high oil absorption capacity
  • Kobopearl 500-IG / 500-IGR / 500-IR : new light scattering pigments based on our KTZ pearls pearlescent pigments with PMMA microspheres.
  • ITT/Dimethicone Crosspolymer treatment : new addition to our Crosspolymer treatment line with multimedia and superdispersible characteristics.
  • PEG-8 Silane treatment : hydrophilic coating.
  • Dispersions in Synthetic Wax : dispersions of pigments that show an improved stability, even with high solid loading.


> KTZ-Pearls

Our range of pearlescent pigments has been renamed "KTZ-Pearls" to illustrate the collaboration between Taizhu and Kobo Products. Neither the product, nor specification has changed, only the name. This change is effective March 15, 2004.

Kobo is presenting two posters in the Technology Showcase :

   - Titanate/Silicone Crosspolymer : A New Coating for Cosmetic Powder
     Presented by : Yun Shao & Eric Smith
Abstract : Cosmetic powders are often coated with various organic compounds to enhance the chemical stability and compatibility with other ingredients a formula. Isopropyl titanium triisostearate is a very lipophilic coating. However, it is not very hydrophobic or stable at low pH. Coatings of silicones are often very hydrophobic but often not lipophilic enough. In the new technology, an organotitanate and a functionalized silicon compound are reacted on suitable cosmetic powders to produce the hybrid coated powders. The organotitanate not only acts a monomer in the formation of the crosspolymer but also catalyzes the reaction of silicones and pigment surface. As a result, a stable, web-like coating with -Si-O-Ti- as the main structure is created on the pigment surface.
Sample hybrid coated pigment products comprising titanium dioxide and iron oxide powder, each coated with a mixture of approximately equal parts of isopropyl titanium triisostearate and triethoxy octylsilane show good hydrophobic and lipophilic properties, dispersing well in mineral oil, as well as good dispersibility in silicone fluids. The hydrophobicity remains stable over a wide pH range. When isopropyl titanium triisostearate and methicone are used for coating, the hydrogen potential can be significantly reduced.

   - Koboguard 5400 : A solid hydrocarbon rein for long wear cosmetics

Abstract : Most conventional oil-soluble, solid resins used in cosmetics over the years were chemically based upon rosin. These materials usually have high odor and have other well-known issues associated with them due to their natural origin and structure. There is a trend for cosmetic companies to avoid the use of materials that are based upon rosin due to its allergenic profile. The search for a low odor, oil-soluble resin that performs well in cosmetic applications has led us to explore materials used in other fields and industries and for various applications.
We have found a low molecular weight polymer, Koboguard 5400, that has excellent potential for substitution into formulations where traditional rosin-based ingredients have been used. Koboguard 5400 is a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin with an INCI name of Polycyclopentadiene. This ingredient has excellent compatibility with many volatile and non-volatile solvents, but is most effectively used in cosmetic systems where a volatile hydrocarbon solvent, such as Permethyl 99A, is present. It may also be used in the surface-treatment of pigments.
Koboguard 5400 has been shown to improve long wear in mascaras, eyeliners, lip products, foundation make-ups and sunscreens.

> Crosspolymer treatments

These new, patented treatments combine ITT and either silane (ITT/TCS) or methicone (ITT/methicone) to form a crosspolymer at the surface of the pigment, making them "super-dispersible" in esters, silicones and hydrocarbons.
Treated pigments and powders have excellent hydrophobicity, stability over a wide range of pH and a better affinity for the skin than common silicone coatings. ITT/methicone crosspolymer treatment also has the advantage of a very low hydrogen potential.

David Schlossman made a presentation : Silicone Dispersants and Physical Sunscreens Dispersions, Recent Developments
Introduction : Even since Octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane was used by Armour Dial in antiperspirant stick in 1976, silicone has gained wide acceptance in cosmetic field. Nowadays, silicones have become the key ingredients in many types of formulation, such as makeup, foundation, antiperspirants, hairspray and sunscreen etc. Water-in-silicone emulsion has become very popular during the past few years. In order to meet the need to form stable emulsions with various characteristics, new silicone emulsifiers have been developed and brought to the marketplace.
Beside sunscreen lotions, use of the inorganic sunscreens like TiO2 and ZnO in the daily wear products for UV protection as an added value has become the trend and is welcome by consumers. However, as it is well known, the physical sunscreens scatter visible light as well as UV light. This often causes the so-called "whitening" phenomenon when they are applied on the skin, which seriously affects the aesthetics and the efficacy of sunscreen products. Therefore, size reduction of TiO2 and ZnO by grinding in silicones, cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) in particular, becomes important.

We presented two posters in the Technology Showcase :
   - HELICONE® HC - A New Effect Pigment
     Presented by : Yun Shao & Uyen Nguyen
Abstract : Classical pigments and dyes absorb a specific range of light and reflect the complementary part, creating the color. Unlike them, HELICONE® reflects and transmits light instead of absorbing it, creating color by interference, just like a soap bubble does. HELICONE® is composed of transparent platelets with a helical superstructure. As part of this structure, cigar-shaped liquid crystal molecules are fixed into layers of parallel rows. Each layer has a slightly different molecular orientation and the distance between two layers with the same molecular orientation defines the "pitch", which determines the color. They are four basic colors of HELICONE®. The mechanism will be fully discussed in this poster.
HELICONE® is about 30 µm in size and 5 to 6 µm in thickness. Because of their uniform chemical compostion, they have identical application properties, regardless of their color. They also have good compatibility with numerous binding agents, low density (1.3 g/cm3) and low sedimentation tendency, excellent dispersability and high stability (up to 300°C). They are very pure in terms of heavy metals. They can be used in systems based either on solvent or water.

   - Novel Controlled Density Softspheres

Abstract : Many different types of spheres made from polysaccharides or gelatin are being used in gels and emulsions for their decorative effect. SOFTSPHERES, developed by Kobo Products, are large spherical spheres used for the decoration of formulas and the delivery of active ingredients. Made of agar-agar, they are soft enough for being crushed on the skin without leaving any residue. They are stable in a wide range of pH and in formulations containing high concentrations of surfactants.
However, like polysaccharides or gelatin based beads, SOFTSPHERES are large and usually have a higher specific gravity than that of the medium in which they are dispersed. Thus, it is sometimes difficult to keep them suspended in formulations where the viscosity must be kept low.
In order to expand the range of formulations they can be added to, Kobo Products developed a method to keep SOFTSPHERES well dispersed in low viscosity formulations by precisely controlling their density. The spheres still maintain their desirable tactile properties and their stability. The results achieved will be displayed and discussed. Sample formulas will also be shown.
