Pigments and Lakes are surface-treated to modify their physicochemical behaviors
Lipophilic treatments promote better skin adhesion (NJE-treated powders vs. untreated)
Superdispersible Natural Origin Hybrid Treatment (ASGP - Amino Acid & PHSA)
Powders and pigments may be modified to make their surface water repellent (hydrophobic), oil dispersible (lipophilic), both lipophobic and hydrophobic, or hydrophilic. Other objectives of surface treating are to reduce surface activity, improve skin compatibility, physical or chemical stability and enhance pigment loading in formulas.
  • Natural Treatments

    • Amino Acid & Polyhydroxystearic Acid Treatment (ASGP)

This natural, hybrid treatment renders powders hydrophobic and superdispersible. ASGP-treated powders require minimal energy during the grinding phase, and disperse easily with a quick and uniform color development. They give a creamy feel on the skin, promote better wear and aid in pressing powders.
    • Stearoyl Glutamic Acid Treatment (ASG)

This natural, Ecocert-approved treatment is a Stearoyl Glutamic Acid, Amino Acid coating that offers hydrophobic properties. It gives a great, moist, creamy feel, especially in powders, while also offering good skin adhesion. It is recommended for emulsions, hot pours, anhydrous gels and powders.
    • Natural Olive Esters Treatment (NOE)

Natural Treatment, using Hydrogenated Olive Oil Stearyl Esters to make pigments and powders hydrophobic. It is a stable treatment, with low odor. It imparts color, coverage and spreadability to formulas. In pressed powders, it adds pressability to the cake: powders can be pressed without additional binders.
    • Jojoba Esters & Polyhydroxystearic Acid Treatment (NJEP)

Patented Natural hybrid treatment which makes pigments and powders hydrophobic and easy to disperse with a creamy feel. Only available in Australia.
    • Jojoba Esters Treatment (NJE)

Kobo's patented process enables pigment particles to be rendered hydrophobic with this treatment. This treatment offers a creamy feel and good affinity to the skin. Due to their good pressabilty these products are recommended for use in powders, as well as emulsions and hot pours.
    • Magnesium Myristate Treatment (MM)

This is a natural, vegetable-derived, Magnesium Myristate Treatment. It has hydrophobic and lipophilic properties, is almost odorless. It provides a creamy texture, excellent pressability and good adherence to the skin. It is recommended for use in hot pours and powders.
    • Hydrogenated Lecithin Treatment (NPC)

This natural, Non-GMO Hydrogenated Lecithin treatment, is hydrophobic yet moisturizing. It provides a highly creamy feel and good affinity to the skin. The recommended applications are Emulsions, hot pours, powders, anhydrous gels.
    • Silica Treatment (SIH)

This Silica Treatment is hydrophilic therefore pigments with this treatment applied will disperse well in water. SIH treated pigments and powders demonstrate brighter colors and less surface activity. All of the Iron Oxides are Ecocert approved.

  • Hybrid Treatments

    • Titanate & Dimethicone Hybrid Treatment (TTB)

These new, patented treatments combine ITT and Dimethicone (ITT/Dimethicone) to form a crosspolymer at the surface of the pigment, making them "super-dispersible" in esters, silicones and hydrocarbons.
Treated pigments and powders have excellent hydrophobicity, stability over a wide range of pH and a better affinity for the skin than common silicone coatings.
    • Polyhydroxystearic Acid & Silane Hybrid Treatment (11SP)

Kobo now offers a double treatment of silane and polyhydroxystearic acid (11SP). This patent pending treatment renders the pigments and powders hydrophobic and lipophilic.

  • Lipophilic Treatments

    • Titanate Treatment (ITT)

Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate (ITT) surface treatment is one of Kobo's patented technologies. ITT treated pigments and powders can easily be dispersed in many esters, mineral oils or hydrocarbons at over 70% solids.
ITT treated pigments and powders are used to develop dry feeling cream-to-powder formulas or liquid foundations, cheek color, eye shadow and sunscreen formulations. They also have excellent affinity to the skin.
ITT treatment is patented and approved for use globally.
    • ITT/Amino Acid Treatment (ASI)

This Treatment combines Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate (ITT) with Sodium Lauroyl Aspartate (an Amino Acid). ASI-treated pigments are hydrophobic and lipophilic, which makes them disperse easily into oils. It provides a creamy texture, moisturizing feel and uniform spreading. The recommended applications are hot pours, powders, emulsions and gels.

  • Silicone and Silane Treatments

    • Silane Treatment (11S)

Triethoxycaprylylsilane treated pigments and powders are easy to disperse in esters, mineral oils and silicone fluids, and higher pigment loading can be achieved as compared to methicone treated pigments. They also have zero hydrogen potential and no residual methanol.
    • Methicone Treatment (MS)

This Methicone Treatment is very hydrophobic and is stable at pH of 3 – 9. It gives a somewhat dry skin feel. It is good for wet/dry powder formulation, W/Si emulsions and hot pours.
    • Dimethicone Treatment (DS)

This Dimethicone treatment is good for wet/dry powder formulation and W/Si emulsions. It has no Hydrogen potential, is less hydrophobic than methicone treatment, and it provides good slip and more lubricious feel than methicone. The recommended applications are W/Si emulsions and powders.

  • Fluorinated Treatments

    • Perfluorohexylethyl Triethoxysilane Treatment (FS)

Kobo’s new environmentally agreeable treatment Fluoro Silane is both hydrophobic and lipohobic which inherently contributes to long wear in makeup. Our (FS) Treatment includes pigments such as Lakes and Iron Oxides.
